Matthew Marcot American, b. 1997

Matthew Marcot – born in 1997 and raised in Manhattan – is an American, self-taught artist specializing in Abstract and Neo-Expressionism, and primary mediums are semiotics and collage. An underlying theme in Marcot’s work is giving visual expression to unseen ritualistic and cosmic forces - both benign and menacing - that both underline and govern modern civilization. This was a facility of ancient art forms based on superstition and religiosity, such as in African sculpture, religious manuscripts, and cave drawings, that Marcot brings to contemporary life.

Marcot’s art is fueled by his desire to explore the essence of what it means to be human in an increasingly mechanized and disassociated world. Through Marcot's embrace of primal expression, such as his own brand of hieroglyphic-like calligraphy, biomorphic semiotics, and austere geometric portraiture, he brings the human being back to their roots.

Marcot works with materials such as charcoal, cut-up paper, found materials, and acrylic paint in an austere, intentional fashion to emphasize the necessity to rediscover the primal, unbridled spirit of the human being, which seems to him endangered by the impersonality of advancing technologies.

Marcot works out of his studio in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. In 2022 he had four solo exhibitions—The Matthew Marcot Exhibition at Raul Retail; Renderings of the Spirit at EV Gallery; House of Marcot (displaying two twenty-five foot murals) at Gotham Depot Moto; and SURRENDER at Revelation Gallery—as well as appearing in four magazines, Social Life Magazine; Makari Magazine; Art Plugged; and My New York Magazine. In 2023, Marcot was featured in the Beyond Art exhibit at Tribeca's One Art Space; exhibited at La Fourchette de Roze in Côte d'Ivoire; and a series of his paintings were installed at the renowned skyscraper, 1411 Broadway, in Times Square, Manhattan. He also held the Winter  Salvation solo exhibition and installation at Midtown's iconic Copacabana Nightclub.
